A.    Yorkshire Registers.

The parish registers with most Thornber records are those of Waddington, Slaidburn and Gisburn, formerly in Yorkshire but now in the Borough of Pendle in Lancashire.  Several family trees for Thornbers living in these areas are shown on this site and others will be added in due course. These parishes have been well served by transcribers and indexers as mentioned briefly below and as shown in more detail on the pages describing churches.

There is a Yorkshire Parish Register transcripts for Waddington St. Helens (1599 to 1812) and bishop's transcripts are available at Lancashire County Record Office to cover the period from 1813. Similarly there is a YPRS transcript for Gisburn St Mary (1558-1812) and members of the Upper Ribble Valley branch of the Lancashire Family History and Heraldry Society have prepared a transcript of the records from 1813, which can be found in Clitheroe Library.  The records of Slaidburn St. Andrew have been transcribed and published privately by Chris Spencer and Reg Postlethwaite in two volumes covering 1600 to 1837 for baptisms and marriages and 1600 to 1852 for burials. Thornber family groups at Slaidburn are shown in a separate file..

As they are not in the IGI, I list the burials for these three important parishes on the following pages:

Thornber family Baptisms, Marriages and Burials at Slaidburn from 1600-1837
Thornber family Baptisms, Marriages and Burials at Gisburn to 1812
Thornber family Burials at Waddington from 1600-1849

The following are the full records for the baptisms & marriages for Waddington.

Thornber family baptisms at Waddington from 1599 to 1812
Thornber family marriages at Waddington from 1599 to 1812

Other Yorkshire Parish and Chapel Registers

There are relatively small numbers of Thornber records in the neighbouring parishes and it is intended that eventually they will be gathered and shown in this section.  Among those included so far are Mitton, Barnoldswick, Bolton by Bowland, Gargrave, Bracewell, Giggleswick, Long Preston, Clapham, Bentham, Kirkby Malham, Ingleton, Arncliffe, and Thornton in Craven, Houghton Chapel at Tosside in Gisburn Forest, Holden Chapel near Bolton by Bowland, Mount Sion Sandy Syke in Gisburn Forest.

B. Lancashire Registers

By contrast with the situation in the Bowland area, the parishes across the boundary in Lancashire have much smaller numbers of Thornber entries.   Places such as Whalley, Burnley, Downham and Clitheroe have most.  Many other Lancashire Parishes have only a handful. An attempt has been made to gather them together so that any connections can be made.  To this end a table of Lancashire baptism and marriage records is being assembled.  All the Thornber records for Downham have been gathered separately and will be incorporated fully in the first listing in due course.

Thornborough and its spelling variants together with the variants of Thornber have been gathered for many Lancashire parishes to try to identify cases where the same family is recorded with more than one spelling of the name.   At attempt has been made to draw some of these into family groups.
