REGISTRATION DISTRICTS IN SUSSEX

The list below shows the civil registration districts in Sussex since 1837. The same districts were used to compile the censuses returns for the years 1851 to 1911.

For the purposes of these pages, "Sussex " refers to:

the ancient county of Sussex (1837–89)
the administrative county of East Sussex (1889–1974), with the county boroughs of Brighton, Eastbourne, and Hastings.
the administrative county of West Sussex (1889–1974).
the non-metropolitan counties of East Sussex and West Sussex (from 1974), with the unitary authority of Brighton & Hove (from 1997).
