Origins of the name:

There have been a few variants of the name Norquay, Norquoy, Nurquoy, Nurqwoy, Nurkway, Northquoy. Nowadays there just seems to be the two forms - Norquay & Norquoy.

Norquay is regarded as an Orkney name, a look at the IGI for the British Isles shows 96% of the Norquays were born in Orkney, and being localised in the parish of South Ronaldsay in particular.

George F Black, The Surnames of Scotland (Edinburgh, 1993) states:
Norquoy: Old Orcadian surname from one or other of the places named N. in the islands. Old Norse: nord kvi ‘north fold ‘.

Notes:

The individual page gives the parents, spouses and children (where known). Known events, typically birth, marriage, census and death, are listed in date order.
If the actual date is unknown I have used 01/01/YYYY.
The source of the information is shown inside [square brackets], the abbreviations used are OPR-Old Parish Registers, SI-Statutory Index / General Registers Office, FT - Family Tree.
The census details list all the individuals in the house and give their age, relationship to the head, condition - married/single etc, occupation and where born. The census reference is Parish/District/Property_Number.
