GLASBY Family History Research One-Name Study in Progress Family history has been my hobby for almost 20 years now, my research is by no means complete, this is only the story so far.......... I sometimes believe I have found all about the particular family I am looking for and then find another piece of information that makes me have to think again! My own personal research into my mothers family tree has shown that most of our ancestors have been in and around the town of Retford in the North Nottinghamshire area of the UK. I am back to a marriage in 1808 in Lound a village just north of Retford for sure but am still working on what happened before then. I have concentrated my efforts in recent years on spreading my family tree outwards and downwards as opposed to trying to get any further back. I am also assuming anyone reading these pages has either some previous experience in tracing their family tree or at least some interest in this subject, I am therefore not going to cover how to trace your family tree in any detail, lots of good books out of the library or book shop can help you with that. Some suggest it has Scandinavian origins, a distant relative got a Family Name History A4 size document for the name Glasby from a company dealing in these items and it suggests the name comes from the old Scandinavian name Glathr - and the -by ending means farmstead. Meaning "dweller at farmstead or village of man named Glathr". I am not an expert in the surname meaning field but I have doubts about using these documents and their information as serious tools of research as they do not quote the sources used, but in saying that they do look nice on the wall! (I haven't got one of my own I hasten to add..) I have searched many a book on meanings of surnames and not found Glasby in it, though once whilst at the Nottingham Archives Office I saw a reference to a similar name - Gilasbey - see Gillespey - o "bishops servant" scots gaelic. Source: The Penguin Dictionary of Surnames. I find this rather interesting as I have not found any Scottish references to the name in the IGI, etc under the spelling Glasby. I have in the past been contacted by people researching Gillespie asking if I have found any connections with Glasby (but I haven't so far). This is an area we have to keep an open mind about! I can not at this moment state categorically where the name Glasby was used for the first time and why. In my research I have collected information from several sources, and can give you an idea as to my earliest references at this moment. IGI (International Genealogical Index) This is produced by the Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormons) and is available on microfiche at various locations - libraries etc. It basically contains information they have taken from Parish Registers for a period up to about 1850 I think, the information could only be gleaned for the dates that the majority of the people named were assumed to be dead. NOT ALL PARISHES are covered, some bishops/clergy would not release their registers for inclusion in this scheme, and the dates covered vary from parish to parish. The counties of the UK that I have copies of the IGI that have reference to the name Glasby or variants are:-
The I.G.I. also groups similar names together, though this is sometimes to our advantage there is at least one of the counties I have since noticed had Glaspy further down the page and I know at some time I will have to check all the UK counties for other missing entries like this. * At the moment I feel I have a fair representation of the Glasby entries on the 1988 edition of the IGI. Not all of these counties show the name as Glasby, here is a list of the counties with the different spellings you will find. The dates are of the earliest refs to that particular spelling.
The IGI is not error free, I would be interested to hear from anyone with errors they have found. The following are errors I have found in the Notts IGI:- Notts IGI Marriage Henry Glasby and Mary STACK (Parish Register shows Shacklock) 1808 Lound. Where does the name occur on the census? I have listed Glasby's from the Retford, North Notts area and have requested some from an advert in the Family Tree Magazine for the Birmingham area. I am hoping to collect more when I get more time and can widen my search. I would be pleased to hear from anyone with any they have found in other areas, and in particular any refs from indexes people may have bought from their local family history society, as I can follow these up a lot easier if I have a folio number, etc. At the moment I have:- Retford Area 1841,1851,1861,1871,1881,1891 These are some of the local villages I have refs to Glasby entries from, please let me know if you know of any in your particular area. Similar information can be viewed over the Internet at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site [www.cwgc.org] The added advantage to looking on the CWGC site is it mentions casualties from the Commonwealth countries in both wars and sometimes includes parents names and home addresses. There are not that many entries for Glasby, Glassby or Glasbey. The following information is from the GRO Miscellaneous Section:- Index to War Deaths 1914-1921 (other Ranks) Army
The Edgar entry above is that of my Great Great Grandfather's nephew, he died 2nd May 1918 age 20. He is buried at The Etaples Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France about 27 kilometres south of Boulogne. WILLS and ADMONS relating to GLASBY This is a brief list of references I collected from the Probate Office when it was at Somerset House - now moved to First Avenue House in London. I have not yet finished collecting all the years but have so far listed 1858-1951. Below is a brief list of references to the name Glasby, Glasbey & Glassby up to 1940. The index actually states Name, last address, date of death, place and date of Probate, Executors and value of Estate. In the case of women sometimes their husband's name. eg:"wife of............." . To get a full copy of the Will you will need to apply to the Probate Office. I have never done this locally but had copies from Somerset House (now First Avenue House). The last I heard it now costs £5.00 for a copy of a Will. BE WARNED - Will's can be very detailed - (I have one from the following list of Glasby's that states amongst other things what set of Crockery someone was having) OR they can be very straightforward - (eg: "I bequeath all my belongings to......................"signed..............). They can mention lots of names but on the other hand mention just the sole benefactor. ANY YEARS with nothing written alongside means I found no entries for Glasby in that year, I have listed the years just to prove which years I have checked so far. If you find any of your family in the list above I would appreciate it if you could let me know, I can send you full details of the index entry and I would like to keep a record of which of the above Glasby's fit in with people's research, and how helpful this list has been for people visiting this site. PROTESTATION RETURNS From a book at my local library entitled: Protestation Returns 1641/2 Notts/Derbys by W F Webster there were no Glasby's listed but the nearest I could see to the name was GADSBY and they were listed as from Attenborough, Beeston, Lenton, Trowell, Normanton-on-Soar, Bleasby and Kirklington. When I started researching I was not looking for anyone famous called GLASBY, I suppose fame can be defined in many different ways, nowadays it is more likely to mean a pop, film or sports star, but I have come across a few Glasby's I would like to find out more about. I am also on the look-out for others of course, my "idea" of fame could include someone growing a prize specimen flower at a local garden holders stall, etc. For example:- HARRY GLASBY THE PIRATE The first I heard about this one was from someone in Sheffield, I eventually wrote to Sheffield Library not really believing there could have been a pirate by the name Glasby, but sure enough a positive response was received from that library. He had sailed with Bartholomew Roberts and reference to the story can be found in Daniel Defoe's "A General History Of the Pyrates" On the internet a brief mention of him can be found at [www.mariner.org/exhib_pirate] THREE ARTISTS BY THE NAMES GLASBY, GLASBEY, GLASSBY *The book was: "The Dictionary of British Artists 1880-1940 An Antique Collectors Club Research Project listing 41,000 Artists" Compiled by J Johnson and A Grevtzner. WILLIAM GLASBY - Stained Glass Artist Died 1941 at Horsham Sussex, had lived previously in London and exhibited at the Royal College of Art (1900-1923). His obituary states his work was sent to many places around the world and in particular the Peach Tree Church at Atlanta USA. He left a wife and two daughters. On the internet I found a reference to a church in the Isle of Man which has two windows by him see [www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/contrib/manx/parishes/mn/gwin] I also contacted the lady involved in the Isle of Man study and sent her copies of what I had on this artist for her research. Another web site of St Marks Church, Colney Heath states they have a Glasby window see [www.roestock.demon.co.uk/stmarks/history] To see the Peach Tree church look at [http://www.ci.atlanta.ga.us/DEPT/URBAN/peachtr.htm] A fourth reference has been found at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Arkansas to view see page [www.quapaw.com/tour99/trinity.htm] If you know of anymore examples of his windows or more about the man I would be very interested in hearing from you....... EDWIN H GLASBY - Landscape Painter (Exhibited 1922-1925 address given as Lane End, Chapel Town, Sheffield) I have not much on this gentleman though two of his works are listed as sold by auction from information I received from the National Art Library. Please let me know if you know of the whereabouts of any of his work or about the person himself. ROBERT GLASSBY - The Sculptor (Exhibited 1883-1896 address Chelsea, London) Well, this one turned out to be VERY interesting, he worked under Sir J E Boehm, Sculptor to Queen Victoria and from a piece out of a book I was sent by The Witt Institute, in London he hoped to be named after Boehms's death as the successor to the title Sculptor Ordinaire to Queen Victoria, some of his works are part of the Royal Collection. I have been sent some photocopies of 2 examples of his work but I don't know that much about the man and whether he was married, I would have thought that the position he held at Boehm's studio must have warranted a write up somewhere when he died but I haven't had time to look as yet.
