Registration Districts in Shropshire

REGISTRATION DISTRICTS IN SHROPSHIRE

The list below shows the civil registration districts in Shropshire since 1837. The same districts were used to compile the census returns for the years 1851 to 1921.

For the purposes of these pages "Shropshire" refers to:

the ancient county of Salop (1837–89).
the administrative county of Salop (1889–1974).
the non-metropolitan county of Salop (1974–80) and Shropshire (from 1980), with the unitary authority of Telford & Wrekin (from 1998).

Bromsgrove	Worcestershire	1837	1844	Partly in Shropshire until 20.10.1844.
Church Stretton	Shropshire	1837	1935	Abolished 1.10.1935 and divided between Ludlow, Shrewsbury and Bridgnorth registration districts.
Cleobury Mortimer	Shropshire	1837	1935	Abolished 1.10.1935 and added to Bridgnorth registration district.
Clun	Shropshire	1837	2005	Abolished 1.9.2005 and added to Shropshire registration district.
Ellesmere	Shropshire	1837	1935	Abolished 1.10.1935 and divided between Oswestry, Overton, Whitchurch and Shrewsbury registration districts.
Forden	Montgomeryshire	1870	1935	Created 1.7.1870 by renaming Montgomery registration district. Partly in Shropshire until 1.10.1935.
Kidderminster	Worcestershire	1837	1895	Partly in Shropshire until 30.9.1895.
Knighton	Radnorshire	1837	1933	Partly in Shropshire until 1.4.1933.
Ludlow	Shropshire	1837	2005	Abolished 1.9.2005 and added to Shropshire registration district.
Madeley	Shropshire	1837	1935	Abolished 1.10.1935 and divided between Wenlock, Wellington and Shrewsbury registration districts.
Market Drayton	Shropshire	1837	1935	Abolished 1.10.1935 and divided between Whitchurch and Newcastle-under-Lyme registration districts.
Montgomery	Montgomeryshire	1837	1870	Renamed 1.7.1870 to become Forden registration district.
Newport	Shropshire	1837	1935	Abolished 1.10.1935 and divided between Wellington, Stafford and Cannock registration districts.
North Shropshire	Shropshire	1970	2005	Created 1.1.1970 by renaming Whitchurch registration district. Abolished 1.9.2005 and added to Shropshire registration district.
Oswestry	Shropshire	1837	2005	Abolished 1.9.2005 and added to Shropshire registration district.
Seisdon	Staffordshire	1837	1839	Created 1.7.1837. Abolished 31.3.1839 and added to Wolverhampton registration district.
Shifnal	Shropshire	1837	1935	Abolished 1.10.1935 and divided between Wellington, Cannock and Bilston registration districts.
Shrewsbury	Shropshire	1837	1871	Abolished 1.10.1871 and added to Atcham registration district.
Shrewsbury	Shropshire	1935	2005	Created 1.10.1935 out of Atcham, Church Stretton, Madeley and Ellesmere registration districts. Abolished 1.9.2005 and added to Shropshire registration district.
Shropshire	Shropshire	2005		Created 1.9.2005 from Bridgnorth, Clun, Ludlow, North Shropshire, Oswestry and Shrewsbury registration districts.
Stourbridge	Worcestershire	1837	1844	Partly in Shropshire until 20.10.1844.
Telford & Wrekin	Shropshire	1998		Created 1.4.1998 by renaming Wrekin registration district.
Tenbury	Worcestershire	1837	1934	Partly in Shropshire until 1.7.1934.
Wellington	Shropshire	1837	1974	Abolished 1.4.1974 and added to Wrekin registration district.
Wem	Shropshire	1837	1935	Abolished 1.10.1935 and added to Whitchurch registration district.
Wenlock	Shropshire	1935	1948	Created 1.10.1935 out of Madeley registration district. Abolished 1.7.1948 and added to Bridgnorth registration district.
West Bromwich	Staffordshire	1837	1844	Partly in Shropshire until 20.10.1844.
Whitchurch	Shropshire	1837	1838	Abolished 15.1.1838 and added to Wem registration district.
Whitchurch	Shropshire	1853	1969	Created 4.4.1853 out of Ellesmere, Great Boughton, Nantwich, Wem and Wrexham registration districts. Renamed 1.1.1970 to become North Shropshire registration district.
Wolverhampton	Staffordshire	1837	1935	Partly in Shropshire until 1.4.1935.
Wrekin	Shropshire	1974	1998	Created 1.4.1974 out of Wellington registration district. Abolished 1.4.1998 to become Telford & Wrekin registration district.
